IELTS, TOEFL & English Test Guide

6 min read

Most international scholarships require proof of English proficiency. This guide explains which test to take, what scores you need, and how to prepare.

Which test should I take?

IELTS Academic is the safest choice for most SEA students applying to scholarships worldwide. It is accepted almost everywhere. If you are targeting US scholarships specifically, TOEFL is equally strong. Only take Duolingo or PTE after confirming the specific scholarship accepts it.

Tips to improve your score

Can I get a waiver?

If you completed your undergraduate degree entirely in English, many scholarships will waive the language test requirement. You will usually need a letter from your university confirming the medium of instruction. Check the scholarship FAQ or email their office to confirm before assuming this applies to you.
