IELTS, TOEFL & English Test Guide
6 min read
Most international scholarships require proof of English proficiency. This guide explains which test to take, what scores you need, and how to prepare.
Which test should I take?
IELTS Academic is the safest choice for most SEA students applying to scholarships worldwide. It is accepted almost everywhere. If you are targeting US scholarships specifically, TOEFL is equally strong. Only take Duolingo or PTE after confirming the specific scholarship accepts it.

What score do I need?
Requirements vary by scholarship and programme. Common benchmarks:
| Scholarship | IELTS | TOEFL |
|---|---|---|
| Australia Awards | 6.5 (no band <6.0) | 84+ |
| Chevening (UK) | 6.5 (no band <5.5) | 88+ |
| Fulbright (US) | 7.0+ | 100+ |
| DAAD (Germany) | 6.0–6.5 | 80–90 |
| Erasmus Mundus | Varies by consortium | Varies |
Always check the official scholarship website — requirements can change.
Tips to improve your score
- •Practice with official materials. Use the British Council or IELTS.org for IELTS, or ETS.org for TOEFL. Free sample tests are available on both sites.
- •Focus on your weakest section first. Most SEA students find Writing and Speaking harder than Reading and Listening. Spend more time there.
- •Practice speaking in English daily. Find a language partner, join an English-speaking group online, or record yourself answering practice questions and listen back.
- •Do not memorise template answers for writing. Examiners are trained to spot these and it limits your band score.
- •Book your test early. Test centre slots in major SEA cities fill up weeks in advance, especially in application season (September–January).
Can I get a waiver?
If you completed your undergraduate degree entirely in English, many scholarships will waive the language test requirement. You will usually need a letter from your university confirming the medium of instruction. Check the scholarship FAQ or email their office to confirm before assuming this applies to you.
